This January has been a hectic month. Maybe you’ve added a stop at the gym to your morning routine — those pesky resolutions, and all — or maybe you missed a newsletter or two because you were too busy shivering.
We know you don’t want to miss a thing that happens in Derby City, so here’s a look back at our most-read stories from the month.
You’ll be glad to know that the ear X-tacy sign isn’t in dust-covered storage after all, it’s at the Frazier Museum.
It might be a few months before we begin spring cleaning, but that didn’t stop us from digging around in Derby City storage to find these lost gems. From LOU’s forgotten fleur-de-lis fountain to the Kentucky Derby-style clock, we dusted off three Louisville landmarks of years’ past.
According to you, LOU, recognition for these local legends was long overdue. When the Hometown Heroes Class of 2024 was announced, you were quick to celebrate and tell us who was deserving of their own banner.
This home at 1446 Cherokee Rd. is still on the market.
We scoured the market, finding the most interesting and unique homes Derby City dollars could buy, including a luxury property near Cherokee Park. When we shared photos from the home on Instagram, @edthomas5 commented: “Used to go to some great parties in this house.”
When the Shelby Park Neighborhood Association launched a petition to restore the neighborhood’s former Louisville Free Public Library branch, we buried our nose in a book to bring you the history behind the building. Trust us, it’s rich.
Derby City has gotten used to celebrating its own during the Hollywood awards season, but you were hungry to learn that two Louisville chefs who were up for the James Beard Awards.

Our readers’ local love stories

Have you found love in Louisville? We want to know about it.
Every Valentine’s Day we create a map of places where our readers have made memories around the area. We want to hear about every kind of relationship. Tell us about your meet cute stories, getting advice from a parent, learning to love yourself... we love love stories in all their forms. (But do keep it PG, please.)
Add a story to our map by clicking the green “add point” button. You have until Friday, Feb. 9 to submit for a chance to be featured in our interactive map (and newsletter).
We’ll go first with a story of our own: City Editor Jeff met his wife at the Sunergos Coffee shop on Woodlawn Avenue in Beechmont. They agreed to meet for conversation and coffee, and one of them hasn’t stopped talking while the other hasn’t stopped drinking coffee ever since.
I can’t help but wonder if Bob Dylan’s tour date at the Louisville Palace might coincide with some news about the Heaven’s Door Whiskey experience in NuLu — it’s Dylan’s own label, after all. The development was initially expected to open last September, but a new timeline hasn’t come “Blowin’ in the Wind” just yet.
