Not all cancer centers are the same. Some cancer centers offer more specializations, expertise, and available resources for patients, families, and the community.
Why is this designation so important?
Today, Markey is Kentucky’s onlyNCI Comprehensive Cancer Center — and just 1 of only 56 in the nation. The comprehensive designation offers tangible benefits to Markey and its patients, including:
More funding opportunities from the NCI for research, training, and outreach
A powerful recruiting tool for the most accomplished physicians and scientists, whose expertise will bolster Kentucky and its people
More opportunities to collaborate with national + international partners on studies ranging from basic laboratory research to clinical assessments of new treatments
Improved patient outcomes from research-driven care
Since achieving its initial NCI designation in 2013, Markey has recruited 100+ new cancer researchers, doubled its external funding to Markey researchers, and been able to care for many, many more patients. Today, 250+ faculty from 11 of UK’s 16 colleges are actively working on cutting-edge cancer research in the lab, the clinic, and the community.
“Comprehensive status is an investment of faith from the NCI in our work to eradicate cancer in Kentucky,” said Eric Monday, co-executive vice president for health affairs.

TARC and the Kentucky Science Center are accepting submissions for the annual Design-a-Bus contest, where local school-aged kids can get rolling on artwork for the exterior of a bus.
The theme this year is, “The Periodic Elements of Louisville.” Students should think of an important place in their community where they formed a lasting memory and illustrate it.
Here’s how it works:
Open to all elementary, middle, and high school students in Jefferson, Oldham, and Bullitt counties in Kentucky + Floyd and Clark counties in Indiana
Use marker, crayon, paint, or create digitally on a square sheet of white paper
Winning artwork will be featured on a bus in the 2024 Pegasus Parade, and the winning student + family will ride along. The bus will then be used on TARC routes, all through the town.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve just about had my fill of turkey for a while after the Thanksgiving weekend. I ate so much bird that I might even write off meat altogether for a few days. If you feel like I do, it’s good to know that Louisville has a ton of vegetarian and vegan options — I think of it as my post-Turkey Day cleanse.
