This Louisville picnic is older than the Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby started in 1875 and is the oldest continuously held sporting event in the US, but St. Joe’s Picnic For the Kids has been around longer — 26 years longer, to be exact.
The annual picnic was founded in 1849 by Ursuline nuns as a way to raise money for what was then the St. Joseph Catholic Orphan Society. While the days of the traditional orphanage are gone, the picnic continues to be the largest fundraiser for St. Joseph Children’s Home — which operates today as a state-licensed, nonprofit child care facility.
This year’s St. Joe’s Picnic will take place on Friday, Aug. 11, 5 p.m.-10 p.m. + Saturday, Aug. 12, 12 p.m.-12 a.m. at the center’s campus at 2823 Frankfort Ave. Entry and parking are free, but there are plenty of ways to donate your dollars while eating cotton candy and even playing blackjack.
Picnic Tickets
All food and drinks + activities require picnic tickets that can be purchased at booths throughout the grounds. One ticket equals $1 and all the funds go directly to St. Joe’s.

Be sure to hit the ATM ahead of time as most of the gambling games — think: blackjack, big six + pull tabs — are played with cash.

New pickleball venues in Louisville
Pickle and Social will open its second location in Louisville next fall. | Rendering by Pickle and Social
Pickleball has become kind of a big dill. It’s the fastest growing sport in the US and the list of places to play in Derby City just keeps getting longer. So considering its National Pickleball Day, we thought we’d recap the latest venues that have opened or been announced so far this year.
It’s so nice, they’re doing it twice. Goodbounce announced the expansion of its concept in July and will bring the same vibes across the river to Clarksville, IN near the former Colgate-Palmolive factory downtown.
Pickle and Social will host 12 courts (seven fully air conditioned) at a 35,000-sqft complex near Robison Park. The venue will also have a restaurant, multiple bars + full-swing golf bays.

What are Louisville’s unwritten rules?
We’re collecting ideas for an upcoming story, and we want to know what you think are the “unwritten rules” of Louisville.
For example, we all know telling someone where you went to high school is a totally normal way to introduce yourself.
I’ve recently had to start watching my caffeine intake, but my love for the flavor of coffee remains the same. Its sparked a journey to find the best decaf options in the city. So far I’ve only discovered the decaf Americano from Butchertown Grocery Bakery, which comes with complimentary almond biscotti, and Heine Brothers’ deaf Good Morning blend.
