Our hearts continue to ache with the rest of the Louisville community following the shooting at Old National Bank on Monday. Mayor Craig Greenberg has since encouraged Louisvillians to donate blood to support first responders’ efforts to save lives and the victims of gun violence.

Whether you’re an avid donor or looking to give back for the first time, donating blood is a simple yet effective way to give back to the community + make a positive impact on local lives.
The entire process is not only safe, but pretty painless, too.
Places to donate blood in Louisville
Louisville Red Cross, Multiple locations
Schedule an appointment at 5+ Greater Louisville area locations — which you can sort by date or distance.
Kentucky Blood Center, Multiple locations
Search by county to find the closet donor center or mobile drive near you.
You’ll be asked to complete a Blood Donor History Questionnaire to fast track your appointment. No worries if you can’t get to it ahead of time, you can always complete it on site if that works better for you.
When you arrive to donate blood, expect a short physical (temperature, pulse, blood pressure check, and a small finger prick to check your hemoglobin levels).
If you’re cleared to donate, sit back and relax — it’ll be over before you know it.
Things to remember
Eat a hardy meal beforehand + give yourself an hour to digest.
Drink an extra 16 oz of room temperature water prior to your donation in order to prep your veins. Make sure to continue drinking extra water after donating.
Avoid strenuous activities for the rest of the day.
Eating + drinking properly beforehand will help prevent passing out. However, if you do pass out, you are in the care of well-trained nurses who will look after you.

Once a single day of city-wide volunteer service and now in its 12th year, the Mayor’s Give A Day campaign has grown into a full month of Louisvillians lending a hand to their communities.
Throughout the entire month of April residents can participate in one of four ways — extra kudos if you manage all four.
Sign up for one of the Mayor’s Give A Day volunteer opportunities — like helping out with the Central Park amphitheater beautification or preparing meals for people in need.
Report your own volunteer service + share about it on social media using #MGAD2023.
This Saturday, April 15, is the annual Brightside Community-Wide Cleanup. It’s not too late to get your team or organization signed up to participate. Flying solo? Join these two local brewery’s cleanup efforts this weekend:
