Do you know the No. 1 way to find kindness in your community? Make it yourself.

From simple gestures to volunteering your time, here are six random acts of kindness you can perform to make a neighbor’s day or brighten up your community.

Bring treats to work

Next time you’re on the way to work, grab your coworkers some coffee or pastries. Pro tip: Donuts from Clifton Donut Shop and brews from Heine Brothers are a perfect pairing.

Show local businesses some love

It’s no secret that we love our local businesses. Consider visiting a new business to help them get off the ground, or stopping by your favorite coffee shop and leaving a nice tip.

Bonus: We have guides to the local businesses in Schnitzelburg, The Original Highlands, and Butchertown. What neighborhood should we cover next? Drop us a line and let us know.

Plant native species

Add some green to your community by planting native species. Use the National Wildlife Federation’s Native Plant Finder to start your search, and brush up on the Louisville Metro’s rules on managed natural landscapes.

Help our furry friends

Consider fostering or adopting a furry friend in need of a home, or volunteer at a local shelter like Kentucky Humane Society or Louisville Metro Animal Services. You can also donate monetarily or drop off blankets, toys, food, and other supplies.

Volunteer with local organizations

Check out our growing list of organizations with local volunteer opportunities.

Take someone out for dinner

Buy a friend a meal at one of Louisville’s many restaurants. If the weather permits, go for a patio. If not, go for a pizza or buy your friend a beer.
