There’s fun to be had every day of the week here in Derby City, whether you want to show off your trivia skills or get active.

That’s why we’re giving you the rundown on a handful of activities you can enjoy every Thursday — after all, it is Friday junior. As we branch into more days-of-the-week activities, tell us if your business has recurring events Mon.-Fri. that should be on our radar + be sure to plan ahead with our handy-dandy events page.

Pro tip: While many of these weekly events are free to attend, we encourage you to purchase at least one item — whether that’s food, drink, or something else — at these local businesses so they can continue to put on fun weekly events.

  • Aurora Gallery + Boutique in Shelby Park is now open. The woman-owned gallery at 1264 S. Shelby St. held its grand opening reception on Sat., Oct. 29 with “Season of the Witch,” an art show featuring decorated masks. Check it out Thurs.-Sun. — the shop opens at 12 p.m.

  • Sky Zone trampoline park is planning to open a new location at 4200 Outer Loop — previously home to Mr. Gatti’s Pizza. It will be Derby City’s first new Sky Zone location in several years, as the former Jeffersontown location closed in 2019. There is currently no timeline for its opening. (Louisville Business First)

  • The largest girls’ youth basketball tournament in the country — which was held at the Kentucky Exposition Center in July — was recognized as the Best Amateur Event in 2022 by SportsTravel Magazine. Run 4 The Roses hosted 40,000+ female athletes here in Louisville from 48 states and four international countries. 🏆

  • Royals Hot Chicken’s November sandwich of the month is honey butter fried chicken. The 24-hour brined hot chicken is slathered in the NuLu-based restaurant’s house-made honey butter and topped with a potato bun. Get yours + a side of mac and cheese at 736 E. Market St. 🍗
History
  • Yesterday marked the 103rd birthday of Kentucky folk artist Helen LaFrance, who was born in Graves County in 1919. The self-taught artist was known for her “memory paintings,” of everyday life. See her work at the Speed Art Museum through Sun., April 30 in the Kentucky Women exhibition series. 🖼️

Derby City was the subject of a nine-page spread all about experiencing the charm of our city. in the most recent edition of Southern Living Magazine.

The writer — a first-time visitor to the 502 — was delighted by our collection of 19th-century cast-iron facade buildings, our thriving local beer scene + the proliferation of art — from their stay at 21c Museum Hotel to the beauty and functionality of the plants offered at Mahonia.
