Soups and stews are the mainstays when it comes to fall and winter eats, but considering last week was National Curry Week, we felt in-spicered to mix things up when it comes to warming your belly as the temperatures continue to drop throughout Derby City.

Read on for five curry dishes to dig into this cold weather season.

🍛 Chicken curry | Eden & Kissi, 3912 Bardstown Rd. Ste. 101 (take-out or delivery only)

Sarah swears by this curry made with chicken, crushed onions, garlic, ginger, and tomatoes simmered in coconut milk with an array of curry spices. Try it with one side or two — we suggest the yellow rice + plantains.

🍛 Pineapple curry | Time4Thai, 2206 Frankfort Ave.

Made with chunks of pineapple, green bell pepper, carrot, kaffir lime leaves, basil, and coconut milk in its red sauce, this curry is a harmonious combination of sweet and spicy + it’s Katie’s go-to dish from this Frankfort Avenue eatery.

Pro tip: If you’re sensitive to spicy food, we’d suggest getting a 0-1 on the heat scale.

🍛 Roasted vegetable curry | Everyday Kitchen, 552 E. Market St.

Eggplant, zucchini, and red bell pepper come together in this curry served with cardamom coriander rice and za’atar pita bread.

🍛 Red curry | Simply Thai, 323 Wallace St.

This popular curry features dried chili peppers, herbs and spices, coconut milk, and bamboo shoots served with jasmine rice + it can be made gluten-free, vegetarian, or vegan.

🍛 Stop Light Curry Flight | All Thai’d Up, 211 S. 5th St.

New to the world of curry? Have no fear, this curry flight is here and features a sampling of red, yellow, and green curries to get you acquainted with the cuisine.

Back in July, TEN20 Craft Brewery announced it would be opening a third location in the former Douglass Loop Heine Brothers (2200 Bardstown Rd.) coffee shop. Tomorrow, Oct. 14, the local brewery — which has locations in Butchertown and Anchorage — will open its doors at 4 p.m.

The taps will pour rotating favorites like the Storyteller Hazy IPA, and Katie’s favorite, 1834 Lager, in addition to beers made specifically for the new location.

Starting in November, here’s what else the taproom will boast:
  • MozzaPi artisan sourdough pizzas + baked goods handcrafted with house-milled flour — same as its Butchertown spot
  • In the mornings, Highlanders can pick up their coffee as part of the taproom’s “local favorite showcase” that will serve local roasters — like Safai, West Lou, and Heine Brothers’
Bonus: A portion of sales during the grand opening tomorrow will be donated to community organizations + local non-profits through TEN20’s HEADwaters Fund.
THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by Senior City Editor Katie.

Editor’s pick: On Tuesday, Sarah and I traveled back in time to taste a few Victorian-era cocktails with Brian Cushingaka the Victorian Man — and it was like tasting history in a glass. Brian mixed up a historic mint julep, brandy sangaree, and absinth suzette from Jerry Thomas’ 1862 bartenders guide.

On Sat., Oct. 29, you can time travel through a glass too at the Spirit Ball, A Victorian Masquerade happening at the Conrad-Caldwell House. Tickets are $200 and include gourmet appetizers, an open bar, tarot readings + Brian’s Victorian cocktail demonstrations.
