Maybe you have some extra time on your hands, or maybe you’re just in the giving spirit. All we know is that there are more than enough great causes in Louisville to give your time to. Whether you’re an animal lover, an artsy type, a natural mentor, or a health care enthusiast — there’s a nearby volunteer opportunity for you. Here are 26 ways to get involved in Derby City.

If you’re an animal lover

  • GRRAND: Golden Retriever Rescue & Adoption of Needy Dogs | Help dogs in need get back on their paws when you sign up to take them for walks or give them a ride to vet appointments. Volunteers must be 18+ and can join one of 15 volunteer animal care teams.
  • Louisville Animal Care Society | Turn your passion for animals into service by fostering or cuddling with shelter animals, exercising them, or assisting with administrative tasks + community engagement. Volunteers must be 16+ and agree to a minimum time commitment of two hours.

If you have a passion for disabled community members

  • Down Syndrome of Louisville | Dedicate your time on a weekly, monthly, or seasonal basis by joining in activities like the Boogie Down Dance Crew, helping out with social activities, or providing translation services. You can also volunteer virtually by writing thank you cards + assisting with database updates.
  • Harbor House of Louisville | Support local adults with disabilities by working directly with participants as an instructional volunteer or become an ambassador for the organization + assist with special events like the Ken-Ducky Derby.

If you’re passionate about supporting local minority groups

  • Change Today, Change Tomorrow | Download the When I Work app to be notified of volunteer opportunities like food distribution, drives + fundraisers.
  • Asia Institute - Crane House | Support Asian heritage and culture in Kentucky as a volunteer for special events — like the Asian New Year Celebration — administer educational programs for adults and children, or serve as an office assistant. There’s also the opportunity to volunteer as a Dragon Dancer.

For the outdoorsy types

If you want to help your neighbors in need

  • Dare to Care | Fight hunger in the community when you volunteer at one of Dare to Care’s 300 food pantries or kitchens. You can also assist shoppers at the Mobile Market, sort food in a warehouse + distribute meals.
  • Metro United Way | Improve access to equitable education, economic opportunity + health in Metro United Way’s seven-county service radius when you donate your time as a tutor, landscaper, or supply drive organizer. Bonus: find a project to join for Metro United Way’s Day of Action on Sept. 23.

To perform at your mental + physical best every day, proper hydration is key. Unfortunately, most electrolyte drinks are loaded with sugar and artificial ingredients (read: stuff you don’t want in your body).

Enter: LMNT, a drink that replaces essential electrolytes without sugar, coloring, gluten, artificial ingredients or other junk. LMNT tastes great, too — you can even use it as a cocktail mixer. (Hello, weekend hydration.)

Bonus: Louisvillians get a free gift with any purchase.*

Through a local photographer’s lens

Summer through a Louisville photographer’s eyes

As we reflect on the end of the summer, local photographer Jon Cherry — who won a Pulitzer Prize earlier this year — shared these nostalgia-inducing photos recapping summer across the 502 making us wish we could turn back the clock.

Jon’s adventures around Derby City this summer took him to Forage and Bean Roastery and Cafe in Germantown + he showed us a behind-the-scenes photo of Chef Lawrence Weeks at North of Bourbon (hopefully making his delicious pickled shrimp).

He also hit Logan Street Market + even got out to Lynn Family Stadium for a soccer gamewhich is still on Sarah’s to-do list.

Brush up on our end of summer bucket list + see what you can check off in the final week of summer.
THE WRAP
Today’s issue was written by City Editor Sarah.

Editor’s pick: Back in early 2020, I volunteered with Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana and led a class at Southern High School about soft skills. I was excited to present because I’d just gotten my first job out of college and was prepared to share my enthusiasm + encouragement with the next generation.

There was only one problem I didn’t anticipate. I was so nervous. Luckily for me, JA prepares a whole curriculum for you beforehand with worksheets + pairs you with a teacher to help you deliver your presentation. Though I was more nervous than expected, the students were super nice and I’d do it again.
