We asked for beards, and y’all sent us beards. | Photo by Reader Peter R.
Glory be to a good beard. World Beard Day may have come and gone over Labor Day weekend (Sat., Sept. 3), but we’re still celebrating designer stubble in the 502.
According to WorldBeardDay.com, people have been honoring the bearded since 800 AD — there’s even a Swedish village called “Dönskborg,” where the beardless are banished to the forestfor 24 hours in observation of the holiday. Though, “Dönskborg,” doesn’t appear on the map, making us question the validity of that claim.
Whether the origins of World Beard Day are fact or fiction, we love to revel in the quirkiness of a weird holiday — which is why we’re giving you three local beards + barbershops for your hair care needs.
Why it rocks: In addition to facial hair grooming, Eric said Browhaus also takes care of his haircuts. The St. Matthews-based salon also offers eyebrow shaping, waxing + lash lifts.

Reader Robert F. said he’s been growing out his beard for four years.
Why it rocks: Robert, also a brewer at TEN20 Craft Brewery, told us he’s been growing this bad boy out for the last four years. Talk about major dedication to craft beard.

Why it rocks: The vibrant pigment of this beard alone is enough to take us back to the Scandinavian origins of World Beard Day.

The Portland Library — one of the Louisville Free Public Library’s oldest branches — is undergoing a $5.5 million renovation + expansion.
Founded in 1905 and opened in 1913, it’s one of the nine libraries built in the 502 with funding from steel tycoon and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Here are the details of the project:
The project should be complete by fall 2023.
Renovations will improve accessibility in the library + will include the addition of an elevator.
A modern, 4,500-sqft addition will be constructed behind the library at 3305 Northwestern Pkwy.
Key designers on the project include JRA Architects, MKSK of Ohio + the Louisville Free Public Library staff.
The project will be funded via a mix of federal American Rescue Plan money, a state construction grant + $1.5 million still to be raised by The Library Foundation.
Editor’s pick: World Beard Day was actually not on my radar until a few weeks ago, but after seeing that some of its activities included drinking vodka, building a fire + effigy burning, I was captivated.
In the spirit of funky holidays, September also has Sewing Machine Day, National Cream Filled-Donut Day + International Talk Like A Pirate Day, according to Holiday Insights.
