National Donut Day was established by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the Donut Lassies, women who traveled to France to serve donuts and other snacks to soldiers during World War I.

If you’re trying to add more hole foods to your diet, today is your day. June 2 is the first of two annual National Donut Days, and the crew at North Lime Coffee & Donuts is dishing out more fried dough than usual just for the occasion.

Kayla Hawkins, general manager at the Old Louisville location, said that last June the team served ~800 donuts for the celebration. That’s twice as many donuts that go out the door on a typical Friday.

Customers are usually waiting outside before the store opens, and the line is constantly flowing. But don’t worry — Kayla will be ready with extra glazed and sprinkled goodness to ensure the traditional options don’t sell out too quickly.

Pro tip: If you’re looking to get your hands on gluten-friendly flavors, be sure to arrive early as those are in limited supply.
