News Notes

Plan Ahead

We’re less than two months away from this summer’s I-65 closure. The highway will be closed for five miles between the Watterson Expressway and Downtown for multiple bridge replacements. After the highway closes on Monday, June 1, it is expected to see a staged reopening starting on Saturday, Aug. 1. (WHAS11)

Traffic

In the more immediate future, the Clark Memorial Bridge will close this Thursday, April 16 at 9:30 a.m. and reopen Sunday, April 19 at 3 p.m. as crews prepare for Thunder Over Louisville. The Big Four Walking Bridge will also be closed this Friday and Saturday. (WHAS11)

Concert

The National Jug Band festival will return to Waterfront Park this October for the first time since 2022. There will be several fundraisers between then and now, including one at Haymarket on Saturday, April 25. RSVP online, as space is limited.

Outdoors

Jefferson Memorial Forest has a new master plan. Among the proposed developments and additions are a new environmental education center, an observation tower, and suspension bridges + walkways through the canopy.

Derby

Graeter’s Ice Cream has a new flavor, just in time for Derby season. Backstretch Bourbon Cherry features black cherries and praline pecans in a bourbon-flavored ice cream. It’s available now. (Courier Journal)

Holiday

Louisville’s second annual Philippine Independence Day Festival will return on Saturday, June 13 at 4th Street Live. The free event will feature live performances, food, and family-friendly activities between 4 and 8 p.m.

Try This

Did you know? The Kentucky Derby Museum’s Derby Fashion exhibit features over 150 pieces tracing back to the 1870s. This year, the Kentucky Derby Museum Ball brings that history to life — celebrating iconic hats, silhouettes, and race day style. Learn more and grab your tickets.*

Shop

Nordstrom’s end of season sale is on. Save up to 50% off best-selling spring items, like Sanctuary’s top-rated The Perfect T-Shirt. Hurry — the sale ends tomorrow, April 15.*

The Buy

This No. 1 best-selling jelly tote bag that we’re low-key obsessed with for spring and summer. The tip-proof design keeps your tote upright, but it still folds flat to pack or store. It’s also waterproof, easy to clean, and carry-on approved — hello, beach vacay bag. Grab your favorite color (we like iridescent) and let the compliments pour in.

The Wrap

Today’s edition by: Declan

Two eagle-eyed readers successfully identified where the photo I shared in yesterday’s newsletter was taken. Carolyn C. guessed Cherokee Park, and Dana B. got a little closer by guessing Big Rock.

To be precise this, photo was taken just off Beargrass Road near the intersection with Alta Vista Road, just across from Big Rock. If you’ve taken any fun spring pictures recently, I’d love to see them.
A wide streambed with greenery on either side.

There was an egret wading through the water shortly before I took this picture.
