Lace up those skates

Ariana Grande said it best: It’s the time of year to do winter thingslike head to the ice skating rink downtown.

Here’s where you can lace up your skates and hit the ice in Derby City.

Crystal Ice Skating Rink at Fête de Noël in Paristown

This ~5,000-sqft rink is the only outdoor ice skating facility in Louisville — so you can make the most of those wintry vibes. The rink is open to the public during the Fête de Noël festival, Wednesday-Sunday through Sunday, Jan. 4. An $18 ticket gets you 60 minutes of ice time plus a complimentary skate rental, or you can pick up a season pass for $60.

Apline Ice Arena

This indoor facility in the Hayfield-Dundee neighborhood off Bardstown Road is open seasonally, six days per week. It’s $10 to get in the door plus $5 to rent a pair of skates. Alpine offers beginner lessons weekly, at no extra cost — or you can get a private lesson for $1 per minute.

Iceland Sports Complex

In business since 2000, this year-round facility in Lyndon has two rinks. Public skating is open daily in the afternoons + in the evenings on weekends — check the full schedule for specific times. Beginners and advanced skaters alike can sign up for private lessons.

Making a list, chicken it twice

Three chickens, a brown, a white, and a black and white one, roam in fallen leaves among trees. A chicken coop and shed are in the distance.

Fruitcake, mittens, socks — these gifts are so last year. How about giving your loved one (or yourself) an unlimited supply of free eggs instead?

If you’ve been thinking about raising chicks, now’s the time to start thinking ahead to next spring. Residents of Louisville are allowed to keep chickens in their yards with just a few stipulations.

If your property is less than half an acre, you’re limited to five non-crowing birds and one crowing bird — that’s a rooster. Properties over one acre have no limit to the number of birds.

Free range, but only so far. Birds need to be confined to a structure and/or fenced area to keep them on your property.

You can be fined if your animals cause a nuisance, which includes routinely wandering onto other people’s properties or making excessive noise. You must also keep your birds in clean, hygienic conditions — so be sure to do your research. Consider joining a local group of other chicken keepers.

Bonus: These rules apply to all poultry, not just chickens. Ducks, turkeys, and other domestic fowl are also permitted.
