Louisville Water is celebrating 165 years of service this October. Here’s a look back at key milestones that shaped its story:
  • 1840 | A massive fire devastates downtown, sparking calls for a public water system.
  • 1854 | Louisville Water Works is created.
  • 1856 | Shares go on sale; only 51 are sold.
  • 1860 | Water officially begins flowing.
  • 1861-1868 | Early services include firefighting, street sprinkling, and powering elevators.
  • 1906 | The city becomes the sole owner.
Today, the organization serves nearly one million people, continuing a legacy of public health and innovation.
