April will be an exciting month in Louisville with spring in full swing, Easter, and Kentucky Derby Festival fun. So take out your calendar and make plans, we’re checking out some of the city’s biggest events.

Safari Eggventure 2025 | Now-Sunday, April 20 | 10 a.m.-2 p.m. | Louisville Zoo | Free with admission | Eggsplore the zoo on a scavenger hunt, answer trivia questions, and compete in challenges for prizes.

Thunder Over Lousiville | Saturday, April 12 | 3-10 p.m. | Locations vary | Free with Pegasus Pin | Kick off the Kentucky Derby Festival with this high-flying show along the Ohio River featuring entertainment like an air show and fireworks.

Civic

Louisville Metro Council approved a smoking ordinance exemption that permits businesses to allow indoor cigar smoking. Qualified establishments must earn at least 15% of their revenue from cigar + tobacco sales, and cigarette smoking and vaping won’t be permitted. The exemption is expected to go into effect on Thursday, April 24. (Courier Journal)

Announced

A forthcoming park in Southwest Louisville has been renamed to Nick Rodman Legacy Park to honor a Louisville Metro Police officer who died while serving his community. Formerly called Windsor Park, the development broke ground last year and is expected to open this spring.

Award

Kentucky Kingdom has made a splash on a national level, being nominated for Best Outdoor Water Park by Newsweek. You can help it beat the competition by voting in the Readers’ Choice poll through Thursday, April 24. Winners will be announced on Thursday, May 1.

School’s out for spring break. Class will not be in session for Jefferson County Public Schools this week, with the regular schedule resuming Monday, April 7. If you need help finding kid-friendly activities during the break, we’ve got you covered.
