Book a Valentine’s staycation

With Valentine’s Day coming up, it’s the perfect time for a local getaway or staycation with your sweetheart.

We went looking for unique lodgings in and around town that showcase that Derby City spirit and at the time of writing, these two aren’t booked up yet, so you still have time to surprise your beau.

Pendleton Hill Homestead | Shepherdsville
Leave everything behind when you stay on this 80-acre natural property — it’s got everything you need for a refreshing getaway. Hike the trails, fish in the pond, and cook your partner breakfast in bed with farm fresh eggs.

Haunted Hideaway | PRP
This goth getaway leans into its proximity to Wavery Hills Sanitorium, with skeletal decorations both inside and out. Local art lines the walls, and you can work on the go from the home office — you might blur your background for zoom meetings, unless you want to give your co-workers a fright.

News Notes

Biz

Greater Louisville Inc. released its 2025 Local Legislative Agenda. The document details recommendations for local lawmakers from local businesses in categories like regulations, housing, and downtown revitalization. Read the whole agenda for more details.

Development

Demolition has begun on the Urban Government Center. The ~10 acre site has been slated for development since 2017, but plans weren’t finalized until this year. Plans for the property include green space, apartments, and offices. (WHAS11)

Derby

Ready for the race, old sport? The week leading up to the 151st Kentucky Derby will open on Saturday, April 26 with a “Great Gatsby"-inspired opening night. In honor of the novel’s 100th anniversary, guests are encouraged to dress in their 1920s best. Tickets for the night are on sale.

Community

Go Big Lou. Louisville Tourism unveiled a new mobile visitor center named “Big Lou” this week. The truck, which features a small kitchenette, spots for local art, and AV capabilities, will make its official debut in the Highlands St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 8. (Louisville Business First)

Open

La Suerte is (almost) open again after being closed for around two weeks for renovations. The Mexican restaurant will celebrate with a newly refurbished bar — and a Mariachi band — tomorrow, Feb. 6 starting at 5 p.m.

Feel Good

Bow wow. It’s almost time for Super Puppy Bowl Sunday. Two Louisvillian dogs will be featured in the event — Julep and Colonel. Fun fact: Julep is the first St. Bernard mix to participate in the Puppy Bowl. Catch the game on Animal Planet or Max.

Eat

A bold new veggie direction

V-Grits might be closed, but a new plant-based door is opening here in Louisville.

VegKentucky is a new nonprofit with a mission to make plant-based options more accessible and appealing for Kentuckians. Kristina J. Addington, the founder of VegFest and former owner of V-Grits, launched the organization in December 2024.

Community workshops + outreach are on the docket for VegKentucky, but its initial project has been a ready-to-eat meal service. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack items like burritos, sandwiches, and take + bake lasagna are available for orders Wednesday-Saturday, with pickups on Tuesdays.

If that has your vegan taste buds piqued, you’re in luck. VegKentucky will host a free launch event at West Sixth Brewing in NuLu on Friday, Feb. 7 from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sample free food like animal sliders, cheddar bites, mini crunch wraps, and lasagna.

While you eat, you can bid on silent auction prizes like a customized cooking class, a round of golf, or a vegan bodybuilding package, and enjoy music by the Louisville DJ Dropshawn.
