We know the question on your mind, Louisvillians — when’s it going to get really cold?
Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expectin our city for December, January, and February. While exact weather conditions typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, here’s a seasonal outlook to help you prepare for what winter will bring.
Reminder: The first day of winter is tomorrow.
Temperature
Think a little warmer than usual. This winter, Derby City has a 33-40% chance of temperatures being above normal — highs of 45°F and lows of 28°F.
Precipitation
Expect about average precipitation. Louisville has a 40-50% chance of seeing higher than average snow and rainfall amounts this winter.

Open Studio Time | 4-7 p.m. | A Purposeful Ponte Studio | $20 | All art supplies will be provided in this studio space, the only thing you need to bring is your creativity.
Blackacre Candlelight Homestead Tour | 5-8 p.m. | Blackacre Nature Preserve & Historic Homestead | $10 suggested donation | Dance merrily in the old, old-fashioned way with pioneer-era music and dancing, plus view historic holiday exhibits.
Sunday, Dec. 22
Candlelight: Holiday Special | 8:45-10 p.m. | Kentucky Science Center | $39 | Hear holiday favorites like, “Deck the Halls” performed by a string quartet under the glow of candlelight.
That’s a wrap. “The Revisionist,” starring two-time Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman and Alison Brie, has been filming in Louisville this week. The story follows a novelist, played by Brie, and locations included Carmichael’s Bookstore. A release date is TBD. (Deadline + WLKY)
Drink
Rose Hill Lagerhaus is making progress on its Highlands taproom, installing a newly built bar. Located in the former Pivot Brewing space, the concept comes from Monnik Brewing Co. An opening date isn’t yet on tap.
Eat
La Bodeguita de Mima is Louisville’s most-booked restaurant, according to reservation service OpenTable. The NuLu Cuban spot finished ahead of Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse and Malone’s, among other Derby City restaurants.
Sports
Louisville City FC will kick off its 11th season on Saturday, March 8, with a visit to the Charleston Battery. The first home game at Lynn Family Stadium will take place two weeks later, on Saturday, March 22 vs. Loudoun United. See the full slate.
Outdoors
100 acres of forest in Louisville’s South End will remain undeveloped in perpetuity, thanks to a conservation easement. Called “Daisy Hill,” the land is located between Iroquois Park and Dixie Highway. (Courier Journal)
Edu
$6.75 million. That’s how much Humana is donating to UofL’s School of Public Health and Information Sciences for health equity research. The funding will support scholarship opportunities and expand research capacity.
Civic
The Louisville Metro Housing Authority (LMHA) is moving. LMHA will consolidate all of its offices onto three floors of the 500 West office tower on Jefferson Street downtown, overlooking Jefferson Square Park. The new location is nearby other Metro Government offices, like Metro Hall.
