The building at 1527 Bardstown Rd. has been through several residents over the decades, but it’s always been a place you can rely on to get a good drink.
That tradition will continue even after the recent closure of the Against the Grain Public House, announced in August, because Pints & Union is moving in from its New Albany location. In honor of the bar + Indian food eatery setting up shop, here’s a look back at what else has occupied that building.
Cumberland Brews
Founded in 2000, Cumberland Brews was among the first breweries in Louisville’s burgeoning craft beer scene. It operated as a two-barrel brew pub until 2008, when it added a 15-barrel off-site brewery.
Cumberland remained in the location for almost two decades.
In 2018, Cumberland owner Mark Allgeier told the Courier Journal, “We’ve been around long enough that we are seeing the children of our regulars become new customers, second generation Cumberland beer drinkers.
When Cumberland closed in 2019, it passed the torch — and the building — along to Against the Grain to set up its Public House.
Against the Grain
Founded in 2011, Against the Grain was Louisville’s second-largest brewery when it took over the Bardstown Road building, producing 7,502 barrels of beer in 2018.
The Highlands Public House announced it would close in August, though its downtown location remains open.
Pints & Union
This New Albany eatery specializes in pub food, cocktails, and of course, beer. The menu features Indian-influenced dishes like korma and vindaloo alongside bratwurst, wings, and fries.
Pints & Union told Louisville Business First it would be moving into the Bardstown Road building by Thanksgiving weekend. It will be open at its current New Albany location until Friday, Nov. 15.
