Metro Council approves TIF for Urban Government Center

Louisville Metro Council has approved $20 million in Tax Increment Financing — aka a TIF — for the Urban Government Center redevelopment project in a 17-7 vote.

Over the last eight years, there have been a lot of developments with this development along Barret Avenue. We’ve got the full timeline + more details at the link below, but for now, here’s a breakdown of where things stand.

The TIF deal that the Metro Council approved last week would allow the developer — The Paristown Preservation Trust — to keep up to $20 million of the taxes the project would generate, if the development meets certain agreed-upon critera + minimums.

Paristown Preservation Trust’s current $249 million plans for the Urban Government Center include:
  • ~200 apartments + condominiums
  • ~200 senior living units
  • 80,000-165,000 sqft of office + commercial space
  • Hotel with 80 to 100 rooms + five rooftop condominiums
  • Public green space
  • Parking garage with space for at least 400 vehicles
A construction timeline for the project is still TBD. The current plans call for most of the buildings on the site to be demolished, including:
  • The former Kentucky Baptist Hospital building, which originally opened in 1924
  • A former Louisville Metro Police substation
  • An office building, which formerly housed part of the Louisville Metro Housing authority
  • A ~76,000-sqft parking lot along Vine Street
How did the project get here?

Celebrate the Belle of Louisville’s 110th Birthday

Mark you calendars — the Belle of Louisville turns 110 on Friday, Oct. 18.

Louisville’s grand champion riverboat — which is currently the oldest operating Mississippi River-style steamboat in the world — first launched in Pittsburgh, PA in 1914.

Fun fact: The Belle wasn’t always known by that name. She previously went by “Idlewid” and “Avalon.” Listen, we all have a past.

To celebrate, the Belle is taking things back to the heyday of riverboats — the 19th century — with the “Gamblers, Rogues and Ne’er-Do-Wells” cruise, where you’ll:
    • Take a two-hour cruise on the Ohio River
    • Play old-school card games — like old-fashioned poker, faro and brag
    • Take tours of the boat with costumed actors
    • Enjoy period-specific music from Brigid Kaelin
    • Take part in an Absinthe tasting
Tickets for the three-hour event start at $79.99.

Bonus: The Belle isn’t the only riverboat you might spot on the warf. Learn the history of her sister, the Mary M. Miller.
