Summer road trips are in their final stretch, as fall is fast approaching — in 33 days to be exact — but before we pump the brakes, we’re giving you the roadmap to one final trip. So buckle up, we’re headed to Newfields: A Place for Nature & the Arts in Indianapolis.

Experience
“THE LUME Indianapolis” featuring “Dalí Alive”
Step into the imagination of this Spanish surrealist painter — and smell him too — during this 45-minute digital animation. Located on Floor 4 of the art museum, the audio-visual exhibit recreates Dalí’s famous melting clocks + exaggerated creatures amid historical notes on his life across 30,000 sqft of gallery space.
Lilly House
Take a self-guided tour of this 1920s French chateau-style estate, which was donated by the Lilly family along with its 52 acres to become what is Newfields today. The house museum features art, historical photos, hands-on design activities, and a 1917 Pathfinder Touring Roadster in the garage.
🍔 Eat
Garden Terrace
Grab a bite poolside — sort of. This seasonally operational beer garden is located on the footprint of a former 100,000-gallon outdoor pool. The walk-up “pool house” dishes out sandwiches, bratwursts, and salads + pours up local and international beer, as well as wine and coffee drinks.
The Cafe
Grab lunch inside the art museum Tuesday-Sunday. The menu has all the familiar cafe favorite: soups, salads, sandwiches, and coffee + tea. Plus, choose to sit inside or out.
Bottleworks Hotel is a blast from the past, pulling its name from formerly being part of the largest Coca-Cola bottling plant in the world.

This historic Coca-Cola bottling plant turned award-winning boutique hotel is located in downtown Indy — about a 15-minute drive to Newfields — and is part of the Bottleworks District. It boasts 139 guest rooms + suites dripping in original, restored Art Deco designs.

The window for picking sunflowers varies, but peak blooming is usually late August to early September.

Huber’s Orchard & Winery, Borden, IN
Snip sunflowers + zinnias on this 156-acre farm any day of the week beginning at 9 a.m. U-pick tickets are $3-$4 for a tractor ride out to the fields and stems are $3 each or 12 for $18.
Pro tip: The 32-oz Huber’s flower cup, which includes your u-pick ticket, is $19.99 and you can stuff it with as many flowers as you want — about 20-30 stems if you stagger them.
Eckert’s Versaille Orchard, Versailles
The Sunflower Experience reopens on Friday, Aug. 23 and spans across two acres. The $12 ticket includes access to the sunflower field + one stem.
Bonus: On Saturday, Aug. 24, the farm will host Sunflowers at Sunset for the 21+ crowd that includes a complimentary cocktail + music from Matthew Lunsford.
Volunteers address critical community challenges with opportunities that match their interests, skills, and schedules — from grocery shopping with a neighbor to organizing a community garden to mentoring local youth.
Pig Beach BBQ in Waterfront Park has closed. The New York-based restaurant announced the closure with no advance notice to Waterfront Park less than a year after it opened. Waterfront Park is looking for a new tenant for the location. (WHAS11)

That’s a goal-zebo. Rapper Jack Harlow is now a co-owner of Louisville’s two professional soccer teams, Racing Louisville and Louisville City. Neither side announced how much stake Harlow owns. Maybe soccer fans will start belting some Harlow hits. (Louisville Business First)

Anyone up for playing hooky? A Kentucky state statute allows parents to pull their kids from school with an excused absence to attend the Kentucky State Fair for one day. Just fill out the proper form and get ready for a doughnut burger.

“Now when you pick a pawpaw” you can make it into beer. The Louisville Nature Center is seeking ripe pawpaw fruits to be made into a pawpaw ale for the 2024 Pawpaw Festival, coming Saturday, Sept. 7. Anyone who donates fruit will get a free pawpaw ale.
Community
The Louisville Tree Plan is hosting a community information session at the St. Matthews library this Saturday, Aug. 24 at 10 a.m. There will be a short presentation on the plan followed by a group discussion on community priorities and needs. No RSVP necessary.
