As August comes to a close, we’re almost to the end of the summer reading season — even if the temps don’t quite feel like it. As the next chapter season approaches, it’s time to pick out your fall reads. We’ve rounded up a list of books by Derby City’s many talented authors, from memoirs to kids books to novels to histories.

  • Bluegrass Brawlers: The Story of Professional Wrestling in Louisville” by John Cosper | Release date: June 2014 | Basketball and horse racing isn’t the only sport obsession in the 502 — immerse yourself in the world of professional wrestling + the stars that got their start here in Derby City.
  • Haunted Houses of Louisville” by Steve Wiser | Release date: 2014 | Learn about the unexplained, the unknowable, and the undead from the president of Louisville’s Historical League, just one in a series about the history and architecture of Derby City.   • Khalil’s on Dixie Highway is closing on Saturday, Aug. 31 after 13 years in business. Owner Khalil Batshon is shifting his focus to a catering business. A regional chain restaurant, Clucker’s Wings, will take over the space. Head over for live music all week to send Khalil’s off in style. (WHAS11)

  • Construction is finally finished on the Cherokee Park bridge that has been closed since March 2023. The full Scenic Loop is now open, no more detours. It’s the perfect place for a hikeonce the weather cools down again.
Olympics
  • The 2024 Paralympics start today in Paris. Over 4,000 athletes will compete for the gold, including Louisville’s own Oksana Masters. Watch the 17-time Paralympic medalist compete in the cycling road race event on Thursday, Sept. 5. (WHAS11)
