Tomorrow is National Bike to Work Day, and it’s an exciting time to ride a bike in Louisville. Here’s a quick recap of the many ongoing improvements to bike infrastructure we’ve cycled through recently:
If all this bike news has you wanting to get out on two wheels, you’re in luck. Louisville is full of groups + organizations promoting cycling as a means of transit and recreation.

People ride bikes in downtown on a bright, sunny, spring day in Louisville, Kentucky.

You can find more bike groups through the Metro Government and Louisville Tourism.

Social Cycling

Bike Cruise & Brews
Each Sunday, this group hosts a beginner-friendly, five- to seven-mile ride starting at Logan Street Market (1001 Logan St.) at 11:30 a.m. Gear up with other riders + enjoy good food and drink.

Twilight Tuesday
If after-dark rides are more your speed, Twilight Tuesday is a leaderless nighttime ride leaving from Foko (991 Logan St.) every Tuesday at 8 p.m. This group uses the same ~16-mile route each week. Consistency is key.

Louisville Bicycle Club
This cycling group has been around for over 100 years — and they have the photos to prove it. In addition to hosting group rides across Louisville and southern Indiana, the Louisville Bicycle Club puts on new rider clinics to teach safety + repair skills.

Cycling advocacy + resources

Streets for People
This nonprofit is focused on making Louisville’s streets safer for everyone — cyclists included. Its 2024 advocacy agenda calls for slower, calmer streets, paths connecting Louisville’s parks, and changes to speed humps + traffic lights.

Falls City Community Bikeworks
Another nonprofit, this one is dedicated to sharing the tools + skills to help make biking a part of your daily life. The public shop at 1217 Logan St. is open Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Jefferson Memorial Forest recieves $2.5 million in state investment

The nation’s largest urban forest is getting just a little bit better.

The Kentucky General Assembly awarded the Jefferson Memorial Forest $2.5 million this year, building on $1.75 million allocated by the 2023-2024 Metro Budget.

These funds will help continue the construction to Tom Wallace Recreation Area started late last year. Improvements to this area were the focus of the latest Jefferson Memorial Forest Master Plan. Councilman Dan Seum said this master plan will be reviewed this year.

Here’s Jefferson Memorial Forest by the numbers:
    • $2.7 million. The cost of the improvements to the Tom Wallace Recreation Area.
    • 6,900 acres. The area covered by the forest — that’s ~5,227 football fields.
    • $135,000. The amount included in Mayor Craig Greenberg’s 2024-2025 budget to design + install a Louisville Loop trailhead and path inside the forest, adding another access point to the ~100-mile trail system.
    • 1945. The year the forest was established.
