O’Shea’s Traditional Irish Pub will have live music all day on Saturday. | Photo by @U2photography
Louisvillians might be downing green beers this weekend for St. Patrick’s Day, but there’s never a bad time to imbibe the Emerald Isle way in Derby City.
Lucky for you, we’ve got all the info you need on the 502’s Irish pubs.
It might be a bit chilly this St. Patrick’s Day, but if you want to spend some of the holiday outside, O’Shea’s is the place for you. It features two outdoor courtyards, including one with a large — dare we say Instagram-worthy — copper fountain.
This Whiskey Row pub is steeped in history — it’s located inside a former distillery building that dates to 1870. It became Patrick O’Shea’s in 2006. Pro tip: The chicken tenders here might be the most underrated in the city.
The owner of this pub hails from Ireland — Michael Reidy is from County Clare, near the craggy Atlantic coastline in the western part of the country. The Rover is also housed in an historic setting, with the building dating to 1859.
This neighborhood bar is just a bit off the beaten path, and it really is for the neighborhood — the menu features items named after the Highlands, Deer Park, and Bellarmine University.
What makes an Irish pub? Well in “Molly’s” case, it’s Irish ownership. Two Irishmen opened the pub 22 years ago. Pro tip: Molly’s is frequently home to live Gaelic music and it’s also a favorite spot for local soccer fans.
The Raven is Louisville’s home for rugby, showing all of the sport’s major international tournaments. The kitchen here also imports several ingredients from Ireland for its menu, including Guinness beer which it uses in a hearty beef stew.
Flanagan’s has been in business since 2000. As the name implies, it’s a great place for a pint of ale — Flanagan’s offers 150 craft & import beers with 18 on draught.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Derby

The 150th Kentucky Derby is just 51 days away — that’s seven weeks from this Saturday — and with the historic occasion coming down the stretch, the city of Louisville is getting its Derby ‘fit ready.
Recently, ambassadors from the Louisville Downtown Partnership (LDP) hung 500 banners celebrating the upcoming Run for the Roses along downtown streets. The banners feature the famous garland of roses + photos from last year’s race.
Starting next month, you’ll be able to feel — and smell — that the Derby is around the corner, too. LDP will incorporate red and pink flowers into planters throughout downtown, with an eye on the famous colors of the Derby + Kentucky Oaks.
Want to help Louisville look its best? You can help clean up downtown during the month of April ahead of the “fastest two minutes in sports.” LDP is hosting two downtown cleanups next month.
Derby season is always a lot of fun around LOU, and this year figures to be no exception. There’s new Derby Eve party on the books — the Sports Illustrated Revel at the Races night will be held at the Ice House (226 E. Washington St.).
