It’s not a regular spa, it’s a cool spa

A trendy spa opens in the historic Galt House Hotel

LOUtoday_Pelo West
Pelo West gets its name from the Spanish word for “hair” and opened on Friday, Dec. 1. | Photo by LOUtoday
Hey there, City Editor Katie here. 👋

If you’re like me and have never been to a spa before, and the closest thing you’ve had to a massage was one of those leather chairs in the mall — you know which ones — then your idea of what a hotel spa looks like is probably similar to mine, like the Montage Beverly Hills spa as seen on “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.”

However, I was in for a pleasant surprise when I visited the new Pelo West salon and spa on the 17th floor of the Galt House Hotel, which opened earlier this month. The lush green and gold tones + graffiti-style artwork completely erased my expectation of neutral colors and harp music.

Pelo West is the third venture from Louisvillian Kaityln Hubert, who graduated from Assumption High School — I asked so you didn’t have to. The 3,000-sqft spa features four treatment rooms, three hair stations, manicure + pedicure areas, and saunas. Pelo’s products of choice include Eminence Organic Skin Care, R+Co BLEU, and two lines created by Hubert, Tomboy Hair Care and Urban Wild Hair.

A quick look at Pelo West’s services:
  • Haircuts, color, styling: $60-$225
  • Massages: $130-$390
  • Facials: $85-$165
  • Nails: $35-$80
  • Sauna: $30

One brew-tiful coffee coming up

Louisville students create art for coffee cup sleeves

LOUtoday_The Well

Coffee cup sleeves serve an everyday purpose, but The Well Coffee Co. took these often unnoticed accessories and turned them into art pieces with help from students at Pleasure Ridge Park (PRP) High School.

Students in PRP’s art classes put their pencils to the cup to create 500+ individual designs, from heart-warming messages to landscape paintings and cartoon illustrations, boosting the look of the otherwise plain sleeves.

Now, customers of the South End coffee shop — formerly Sister Bean’s Coffee House — can get a taste of the community with their cup of joe.

The Well owner, Pat Stayton, is working with two other area schools to create another 1,000 custom sleeves. He’s also extending the offer to other high schools to get in on the creative action. Just call The Well Coffee Co. at (502) 364-0082.

From the editor
When I said I’d never had a massage I wasn’t kidding, so when I visited Pelo West for the inaugural experience, to say I was nervous was an understatement.

Shout out to Tami, my massage therapist, who bonded with me over John Mellencamp, which put me at ease during my massage.
