‘Tis the season to get into the holiday spirit(s) — and there are some gifts you just can’t wrap, including these fourpop-up bars happening around town through December.
Reservations are required to spin into a glittery world of snowy disco fever with groovy playlists, shimmering lights, and themed cocktails like Nutcracker Old Fashioned that comes with a walnut ice sphere.
Open: Thursday-Saturday at 5 p.m. through Monday Jan. 1
The Nutcracker Old Fashioned at the Disco Blizzard pop-up is also served in a two-tier glass so that you can pour the drink over the ice yourself.
This national Christmas pop-up has been decking the halls inside NuLu’s Green Building for nearly a decade. With wrapping paper walls, kitschy holiday decor + over-the-top glassware, this bar will have you gin-gling all the way to the NuLu North Pole. New drinks this year include Marshmallows & Unicorns, an egg white gin cocktail served in a ceramic unicorn.
This Butchertown bar and music venue triple dog dares you to visit the land of fishnet lamps and Red Ryder bb guns. Try Ovaltine for adults via the frozen Ovaltini made with espresso + coffee liqueur or throw back a green Midori shot served in an ornament.
Open: Daily at 6 p.m. through Sunday, Dec. 31
Bonus: Upstairs is a Christmas speakeasy called Secret Santa’s — think of it as a pop-up within a pop-up. Decked out with mind-bending festive photo ops, this secondary bar will have a separate drink menu + operate the same hours as The Whirling Tiger Thursday-Saturday.
Tinsel Tavern is located on Fourth Street Live! inside Pizza Bar.
Sip on holiday variations of classic cocktails like the Fiesta-vus Margarita, Santa-gria, and Mojito-ho-ho in a tinsel-tastic atmosphere with DJs and games. Reservations are recommended.
Open: Tuesday-Sunday at 4 p.m. through Sunday, Dec. 31

$2.7 million rehab at Jefferson Memorial Forest
The Tom Wallace Recreation Area is located across from the Welcome Center at Jefferson Memorial Forest, which is the largest municipally owned urban first in the US. | Photo by LOUtoday
Named after local preservationist and former editor of the now-defunct Louisville Times newspaper, the ~27-acre recreation area is the oldest and one of the most popular sections of the forest, thanks to its many hiking trails, picnic areas, natural playground, and lake access.
The area hasn’t seen any major enhancements since the mid-1980s and the Tom Wallace Improvement Project aims to improve access and encourage more exploration. Here’s what’s to come:
A paved path around Tom Wallace Lake
New picnic shelters
Boardwalk over a wetland area
Paving of the existing gravel parking lot
Designated fishing locations + a kayak launch
Once construction begins, some areas of the park will be closed temporarily. Follow Jefferson Memorial Forest for updates.
