Have you noticed anything different about Kroger lately? The grocery store is getting a $170 million refresh.

Since July 2023, Kroger has been busy unveiling multiple renovation and expansion projects in stores across Louisville and Lexington that focus on elevating the customer experience through new offerings, building remodels, updated decor, and more. By the end of 2024, Kroger is expected to invest $170 million in improvements.

Kroger’s development projects, by the numbers:

In 2023 alone, Kroger spent $90 million on region-wide improvements. Here’s how it breaks down:
  • $32 million. The total dollars spent on interior remodels.
  • 3. The number of new Wine and Spirits locations (in Buckner, plus two more soon-to-open locations on Terry Rd. and La Grange Rd.)
  • 30,000 sqft. The size of the expansion at the Mt. Washington store.
  • 100. The number of stores in the region (including Louisville, Lexington, Southern Illinois, Southern Indiana, and Eastern Kentucky) that received at least minor updates.
  • 2. The number of new fuel centers.
  • $80 million. The projected total spend to complete projects in 2024 — making Kroger’s investment into regional stores a total of $170 million in 2023 + 2024 combined.

In addition to investing in the local stores, Kroger donates millions every year to community initiatives and programs.

Legacy

🥊 ‘The Greatest’ street just got greater

36 banners of Muhammad Ali coming to this Louisville street

Make no mistake, Louisville is the City of Ali.

The legacy of “The Greatest” can be followed from his childhood home in the Parkland neighborhood to Freedom Hall — where he had his first professional fight — to the Muhammad Ali International Airport, just to name a few.

In the coming weeks, his legacy will continue to be recognized via 36 pole banners along Muhammad Ali Boulevard, between 2nd and 18th streets, leading to the Kentucky Center of African American Heritage.

The banners feature six different photos of Ali, reflecting each of his core principles: confidence, conviction, dedication, respect, giving, and spirituality.

“He’s a global icon for all the right reasons,” Ali’s widow, Lonnie, said at the banner unveiling. “He made Louisville proud and never failed to tell people he was from Louisville, Kentucky — Muhammad’s legacy is Louisville’s legacy.”

The installation comes from a partnership between Louisville Tourism and the Muhammad Ali Center.

From the editor
I play a crossword puzzle every morning and recently learned that an “Oenophilia” is a lover or connoisseur of wine — which reminded me — my favorite wine bar, Nouvelle, is turning six this month.

Celebrate the milestone this Saturday, Nov. 11, during its anniversary party. We heard there will be six-liter bottle of sparkling wine...
