The chilly temperatures, fall foliage, and preponderance of autumnal festivals don’t just signal the start of PSL season — they also mean that Halloween is right around the corner.
Here are three local shops in Derby City that will ensure you’re wearing the best costume at your upcoming spooky soiree.
A Louisville classic for costumes and oddities, Caufield’s has a history that goes back over 100 years. It’s not just costumes — you can also buy other party equipment, like a fog machine, to give your get-together that perfectly eerie ambiance. They’re open for extended hours ahead of Halloween.
You won’t find typical Halloween costumes here — like a ghost or vampire — but you will find a collection of vintage looks available for rent in this Highlands shop. Nitty Gritty also offers vintage clothing for sale — if your everyday ‘fits need a final, old-school touch.
Located in Butchertown, this shop has been in business since 1983. It’s open by appointment only, so give them a call and they’ll help you find a spine-chilling costume that will make a spectacle on All Hallows’ Eve.

Our son, Everett, was born a on Sept. 30. The first few days of parenting have been amazing, but challenging. No complaints here, though — we’ve been able to get more than a few hours of sleep each night. Fingers crossed that it continues.
