🍳 Cooking for a cause

Make a chef-led meal for families in need

If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Luckily, the LOUtoday team has (apparently) learned a thing or two from all those Food Network shows and was able to whip up a meal for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House without a single kitchen fire.

That’s right. Mandey and Katie are definitely not the “Worst Cooks in America.”

Every year, our parent company 6AM City lets its employees (hey, that’s us!) take a paid half day for community service. In early September, we took advantage of this opportunity to give back to Derby City and signed up to participate in the Meals from the Heart program at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kentuckiana (RMHCK).

The chef-led cooking experience allows volunteers to prep, cook, and serve dinner to families staying at the house while their loved ones receive care from area hospitals.

Katie was tasked with making grilled cheese sandwiches.

We arrived at the downtown campus on First Street around 4 p.m. You’ve most likely seen the giant limestone building off I-65 just before the hospital curve. The Richardsonian Romanesque architecture is kind of hard to miss.

We were met by Chef James Garst, formerly the executive chef at Edward Lee’s Whiskey Dry restaurant. After showing us a few knife skills and how to properly take a hot pan out of a commercial oven — we’ll let Katie fill you in on that in The Wrap — he put us to work. Over the next two hours we made gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, basil tomato soup, loaded baked potato soup, and peanut butter blondies for 60+ people.

Mandey made blondies for dessert.

At 6 p.m. the dinner bell rang and we had the opportunity to serve and meet with the families staying at the house.

Now that we’ve lent a hand (and didn’t even get burned once), it’s your turn.

News Notes
Closed
  • There will be no coming back to Come Back Inn. The staple Italian restaurant in Germantown served its last plate of bolognese linguine Tuesday night. The sudden closure comes after 27 years of business via a Facebook post from the owners, which has racked up 330+ comments since the news.
Coming Soon
  • 7 Brew Coffee, a drive-thru coffee chain, is opening a location in Middletown on Monday, Oct. 23. Named after its seven original coffee drinks — like the caramel and vanilla breve Blondie — the shop will be located at 12525 Shelbyville Rd. near Kroger.
Real Estate
  • A 1999 Freightliner school bus is on the market for $17,000 — but this isn’t just any old school bus. This is a skoolie. The 36-ft-long, green diesel bus has been renovated into a small home. The interior features a full kitchen, king-sized bed that folds into a couch, and wood-burning stove.
Eat
  • The CRAFT Beer and Pizza Festival will return for its ninth year under the Second Street Bridge on Saturday, Oct. 21. The foodie fest will showcase 15+ local breweries and 20 pizzerias. Tickets range from $55 to $85 and benefit Cure CF Louisville.
Civic
  • The Solid Waste Enforcement Team impounded four vehicles for illegal dumping this week. Let this serve as a friendly reminder that Jefferson County residents can make Large Item Pickup Appointments year-round for free — which is a lot cheaper than a $750 in fines.
Travel
  • How does Going work? Sign up for free, follow up to five airports, and get notified when flight deals to over 900 destinations are 40-90% off.*

From the editor
Turns out, you cannot take giant pans layered with grilled cheese sandwiches out of a commercial oven using a kitchen towel. I may have disappointed Chef James in the Ronald McDonald House kitchen, but now I know the importance of industrial oven mitts.
