Come on Barbie, let’s go party — at the Pink Palace.
The highly-stylized “Barbie” movie releases in theaters tomorrow, July 20. So, we thought we’d get into the pink spirit — it is Wednesday after all — and take a tour of the real-life Barbie Dreamhouse in Derby City.
The sparkling specs
Dubbed the Pink Palace for obvious reasons, the 5,560-sqft Victorian mansion is located at the top of St. James Court. It was last for sale in 2017 and was originally listed for $735,000. It sold in December 2019 to its current owners for $525,000.
The house has:
Five bedrooms
Three sitting rooms
Two full baths + one half-bath
Three floors
A lower-level apartment
Two-and-half car garage
Two parking spaces
Dreamy features
You can’t wake up and see the sparkle without elaborate decorative glass, a towering turret, and a tiger oak grand staircase. Here are a few other impressive (and more pink) points of interest:
A private backyard with a pool + flower gardens
Pink and white flooring in the kitchen
Front porch views of St. James Court
Chandeliers
Before it was pink
The mansion wasn’t always a single-family home — or pink, for that matter. It was originally built in 1891 as the Gentlemen’s Club and Casino, which had red brick at the time. Then, in 1910, The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union bought the building and painted it pink in an effort to rid it of its checkered past.

The untitled artwork by Anish Kapoor is part of a 100+ piece collection gifted to the Speed by area residents Mary and Al Shands. | Photo by LOUtoday
When you enter the middle gallery of the Speed Art Museum’s temporary exhibition, “Rounding the Circle: The Mary and Al Shands Collection,” a white “rock” the size of the Liberty Bell catches your attention — but the giant, yellow disc hanging behind it captivates you.
The stainless steel art piece by Anish Kapoor is a little disorienting, to say the least. Standing from afar you can recognize the familiar curves of a shallow bowl, but up close, it appears flat. It draws you in like a moth to a very yellow flame and changes your perception of how far away you actually are from it.
It was collector Al Shands’ favorite, too. The object label adjacent to it reads, “It has become maybe my favorite piece in the collection because it involves interaction with the viewer. We all have givens about what we think things are. One of the functions of an artist is to show you that what you thought was reality is not necessarily that.”
