🍹 Sip on this

Our favorite non-alcoholic beverage brands made in Derby City

We get it, we’re Bourbon City, but the barrel-aged spirit isn’t the only thing flowing around here. Check out these three bevvy brands, sans the booze, that we think are all that and a crystal rocks glass.

Alani Nu

Did someone say Kimade? If you haven’t heard by now, Kim Kardashian has her own Alani Nu energy drink flavor, which launches today at 12 p.m. The strawberry lemonade sipper will join the wellness brand’s 14-flavor lineup, which is Target’s No. 2 selling energy drink.

Our favorite things about the zero-sugar drinks are the bright-colored, art-centric cans and the caffeine boost, of course.

Modica sells its superfood mixers in 16-oz bottles for $20.

Modica

This line of superfood cocktail mixers, founded by Louisvillians Eric Wentworth + JD Mitchell, won’t replace your daily dose of fruits and veggies — but they sure make sipping a margarita feel like you’re part of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop wellness team.

What we like the most is that Modica mimics popular cocktails, but are free of artificial flavors + preservatives, boast less than 10 grams of sugar per serving, and include B vitamins and electrolytes. Plus, you can mix them with or without the booze.

Here’s what its shaking up:
  • Blueberry Lavender Lemon Drop
  • Cacao Espresso Martini
  • Tart Cherry Old Fashioned
  • Turmeric Ginger Mule
  • Cucumber Aloe Margarita

NKD LDY

We love this non-alcoholic spirit company because it makes its products are made using the real thing, so it tastes like alcohol without the buzz. NKD LDY makes a whiskey, gin, and tequila alternative + has zero-proof recipes for each. We’re partial to the spicy basil paloma though.

News Notes
Opening
  • A new upscale cocktail bar will open later this month in Butchertown — and it wants to have the largest Scotch collection in Derby City. Tartan House, located at 1027 E. Main St., will have a New Orleans-meets-Scotland-vibe + indoor and outdoor seating. (WHAS11)
Eat
  • Schnitzelburg will soon be home to a new breakfast restaurant later this month. Breakfast AF will be located at 1008 Goss Ave. and specialize in omelets. The restaurant isn’t just for morning people either. It plans to be open seven days a week, morning and night. (Louisville Business First)
Civic
  • If you have thoughts on the future of short-term rentals — like Airbnb + VRBO — today is the day to let them be heard. Metro’s Planning Commission is hosting a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. for its recommended regulation updates. Louisvillians can attend in-person at the Old Jail Building or virtually.
Community
  • $800,000. That’s how much Heaven Hill Brands is investing in the California neighborhood where it operates its Bernheim Distillery. Dubbed the “Spirited Neighborhood Initiative,” the investment will go toward partnering with five nonprofits, a grant program, sewer system improvements, and planting new trees.
Film
  • The 2023 Flyover Film Festival is landing at the Speed Cinema Thursday, July 27-Sunday, July 30. Curated by the Louisville Film Society, the four-day screening event will include narrative and documentary features, director Q+As, and several parties. Tickets to all showings are $12. See the lineup.
Number
  • 6. That’s how many Racing Louisville FC players are headed down under for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, set to play out Friday, July 20-Sunday, Aug. 20 in Australia + New Zealand. See what players are representing Derby City on a global stage and when you can catch them in action on the field.*
Travel
  • Catching a flight this summer? Consider adding extra time to navigate the airport during the busy summer travel season. Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) suggests arriving two hours before your flight’s departure to allow plenty of time to park, check in, and go through the security.*
Finance
  • Refinance rates are skyrocketing. But home equity rates remain relatively low — which means that now is a great time to borrow against your home. Calculate your payment.*
Shop
  • On our wish list: the NETVUE Smart Bird Feeder. It identifies bird species + captures live, high-quality footage you can save or share from your phone.*

Drink

This is what purple tastes like

Sip these 4 purple drinks

Since we’re in the midst of Drink Up Month and our LOUtoday brand color is purple, we found four violet-hued drinks to sip for the occasion.

Lavender Racing Boost, Heine Brothers Coffee
Part of its line of fizzy energy drinks — aka Boosts — this lavender-flavored drink was made in collaboration with the Racing Louisville women’s soccer team.

Taro Milk T, Honeydew
This bubble tea gets its lilac hue from the taro in it, which is a starchy root vegetable with a sweet, nutty flavor.

Purple Rain, Safai Coffee Shop
I only want to sip you… This lavender and vanilla Italian soda is caffeine-free and honors the king of purple, Prince.

Fly Me to the Moon, Copper & Kings Rooftop Bar & Restaurant
This color-changing gin cocktail starts off blue and transitions into purple with the squeeze of a lemon, thanks to the chemical reaction between the butterfly pea syrup and acid.

From the editor
Butchertown vintage clothing store, Hard Times Collective, is busting out a Wes Anderson-inspired collection this weekend in honor of his new movie “Asteroid City.” I’m not sure what a celestial 1950s desert town outfit looks like, but I’m sure I’ll find it there.
