Ba-goals

If you took an everything bagel and counted all its seeds + then multiplied that by 100, you’d get close to how much we love bagels and bagel sandwiches here at LOUtoday.

No bagel lover goes unloved in Derby City, so here are 5 local options to grab a bagel sando this weekend.

🥯 Cold Smoke Bagels, 1001 Logan St.

This classic, Jewish bakery’s sandwich menu focuses on smoked + cured salmon, pickled herring, and hot-smoked whitefish. Its veggie bagel — with tomato, arugula, and pickled veggies — is a go-to for City Editor Katie.

🥯 Nancy’s Bagels at Payne Street Bakehouse, 225 S. Spring St.

You can get one of several varieties at this shop + house-made cream cheese, or have these soft-yet-crunchy bagels as the base of a breakfast sandwich — which Payne Street serves all day. City Editor Sarah recommends the bacon, egg + cheese on an everything bagel.

🥯 Heitzman Traditional Bakery & Deli, 3333 Bardstown Rd.

Established in 1891, this bakery offers 13 varieties of bagels that you can get for $1.40 each, or $2.85 with cream cheese. Its sandwich creations include classics like the egg and cheese or — if you’re feeling fancy — you can get a steak, egg + cheese sandwich.

🥯 Breadworks, 3628 Brownsboro Rd.

These kettle-boiled bagels have been a LOU staple for 20+ years. While Breadworks doesn’t offer the full sandwich treatment, you can get seven varieties of bagel with regular, vegetable, or smoked salmon cream cheese.

🥯 Bruegger’s Bagels, 119 Breckenridge Ln.

While Bruegger’s is a national chain, it makes the list for the convenience of its location. It’s in the heart of St. Matthews + focuses nearly exclusively on bagel sandwiches, with creative ingredients like honey sriracha cream cheese and cheesy hash brown bagels.

NEWS NOTES

Weather

  • 40º | Cloudy | 8% chance of rain
  • A major storm system is sweeping the Northern plains + heading eastward towards Kentucky this weekend. Potentially, Louisville could see two snowfalls — a light dusting Friday night and heavier snow Saturday night. Follow Louisville Parks and Recreation for open sledding parks. ❄️ (The Courier-Journal)

Festival

  • The Kentucky Derby Festival is planning in-person events for 2022’s festivities. Leading up to the first Saturday in May and beginning mid-March, expect 70+ events throughout the city. Expect some changes to the typical schedule — including the Pegasus Parade moving to Sunday, May 1. See the schedule highlights here.

Sports

  • Yuki Nagasato — a Racing Louisville FC fan favorite — is leaving Derby City after being traded back to her former team, the Chicago Red Stars. She joined Racing Louisville in October 2020 + made 21 appearances and 18 starts on the field during her tenure. We’ll miss you, Yuki. ⚽ (LEO Weekly)

Civic

  • In 2021, 10 Pop-Up Drop-Off events — a free recycling + large item disposal program — took place throughout Jefferson County. The Solid Waste Management report concluded that residents mostly dropped off electronics, bulky items, and documents to be shredded. Overall, the events resulted in a 41% landfill diversion rate. ♻️

Drink

  • Nouvelle Bar & Bottle has a new Wine Collection Curation program where it will design your own personal wine cellar. Nouvelle Sommelier, John Grisanti, curates the selections + you can email him to set up a consultation. No membership is required to participate, just an open palate. 🍷

Arts

  • The South Central Regional Library’s COLLIDER Artist in Residence this month is Shawn Wade. Shawn specializes in acrylic painting + is a member of the Mellwood Art Center community. The library has several classes coming up this month on creativity and design — like designing your own doormat and t-shirt. 🎨

Listen

  • WFPL’s “In Conversation” podcast explores the legacy of bell hooks, who was a native of Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The show airs today at 11 a.m. on 89.3 FM and Kentucky’s poet laureate, Crystal Wilkinson, will be on discussing hooks’ influence + their friendship. 🎙️ (WFPL)

Plan Ahead

  • Be the life of the Mardi. 4th Street Live! is hosting a Mardi Gras Bar Crawl on Sat., Feb. 22. Tickets are $12 and you’ll get beads, a masquerade mask, a 16-oz color-changing stadium cup for your bevs + food and drink specials. 🎉

On Wednesday, Sindi, one of the Louisville Zoo’s rhinos, turned 38. To celebrate her birthday, this 4,000+ pound mammal received a spa day. The zoo’s team gave her a massage + she treated herself to a mud bath.

Wish Sindi a happy birthday in the South African section of the zoo any day of the week from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Pro tip: Bring a canned food item to donate to Dare to Care + receive discounted tickets at the gate.

THE WRAP

Editor’s Pick: Yesterday, I wrote about the Mary M. Miller riverboat + it had me thinking about the time I once started a conga line on its sister boat, the Belle of Louisville, during a wedding.

I would highly recommend hosting any major event on the Belle or at least starting a line dance around the deck.
