The money will primarily be used to “rightsize” ten Derby Citycorridors to better serve those who use them (think: drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists). The project will focus on improving safety in key areas including:
Speed reduction measurements
Fewer travel lanes pedestrians must cross
Creating bicycle lanes, on-street parking, and transit stops
Since 2014, 900+ people have died on the city’s roads. These measures may reduce crashes by 19-47%.
🛣️ Affected roads
Here are ten roadways that will benefit from this grant:
Wilson Avenue
West Oak Street
East Oak Street
Berry Boulevard
Crums Lane
River Road
Zorn Avenue
South 22nd Street
Southern Parkway
Louis Coleman Jr. Drive
🗓️ The timeline
The project will begin with design work, slated to begin this summer. Construction is scheduled for 2024 and is planned to continue until 2027.
💰 The funding
The $21 million comes from the federal government’s Safe Streets and Roads for All grant. The funding will be matched by almost $1.5 in state funding and $4 million in local funds for a grand total of nearly $27 million. The Metro Government estimates that over 60% of the funding will impact underserved communities.

Local LOU love stories
We’re looking for love in all the right places. | Graphic by LOUtoday
For Valentine’s Day 2023, we made a map of places where our readers have made memories around Louisville.
We asked for your help compiling everything from Riverwalk proposals to weddings at Glassworks to making friends at UofL ballgames. Y’all did not disappoint.
Explore these local LOU-ve stories by clicking on the hearts, but there’s one love story that we just had to share:
“In 2009, my husband and I were visiting Louisville and we had already fallen in love with the city. We were living in Chicago at the time and it was getting harder and harder to live there. We were walking on Market Street when I came across a “Before I Die” wall that the Speed Art Museum had installed. It was a big chalkboard with lines where you could write your dreams, wishes, desires, etc. I grabbed a piece of chalk and wrote “I want to live in Louisville.” It took five years and a LOT of work but we did it. Louisville has my heart and I am so grateful for my wish being granted.”
— Carolynne M.
Maybe the best love stories are the ones about Derby City itself. It has our hearts, too. 💜
Editor’s pick: We’re seeing a lot of shake-ups in Louisville’s transportation. In case you missed it, we might be getting Amtrak service to Chicago, Cincinnati, andNashville. Or at least, we’ve submitted to the Federal Railroad Administration.
We’re still waiting to hear about grant applications for a feasibility study, which should be awarded this summer.
