Louisville’s new Large Item Pickup by appointment system

Curbside collection of large, bulky items is changing with the seasons. Now, rather than setting out junk on scheduled weekends, Louisvillians within the Urban Services District can make an appointment anytime of the year for proper disposal.

The new Large Item Pickup by appointment is an effort to help keep Derby City’s streets clear of bulky trash for weeks at a time.

Let’s unpack this junk:
  • Residents will be able to set out up to four items per week.
  • The new program is being phased in after each district’s last large item pick up weekend — check your address to determine where your neighborhood stands.
  • You should receive a letter in the mail when your area has been phased into the new appointment system.
How to make an appointment:
  • First, check to see if the items you’re getting rid of are still usable and could be donated, given away, or sold.
  • If your junk is junk, schedule an appointment online using your address and you’ll receive an email with a pending appointment date.
  • Two days prior to pick up, you’ll receive a confirmation email with the date and approved items to be picked up.
  • Place your junk in the same location as your garbage bins the day before your collection appointment and voila.
What is accepted and a few tips:
  • Items fit for large item collection include anything you can’t fit inside your garbage cart — think: mattresses, tables, couches, bicycles, and stoves.
  • Electronics, yard waste, hazardous waste, construction materials, and appliances with freon are also not acceptable items in the new program. Here is what to do with hard to dispose of items.
  • Bags and boxes are also a no-no — place those items in your weekly garbage collection bins.
