With the Circuit Clerks Offices in Kentucky gradually shifting licensing services to modern Driver Licensing Regional Offices — think online appointments, four and eight-year licenses, and at-home optionsby June 30, 2022, we thought we’d break down the new REAL IDs + where and how to obtain one in Derby City.

The REAL ID is a real thing and the enforcement date of May 3, 2023 will be here before you know it — as they say, time flies, and without a REAL ID, time will be the only thing on a flight.

What is a REAL ID?

A state-maintained license or ID that can be used for:

  • US air travel — passports will still be an accepted form of identification, but driver’s licenses are grounded.
  • Visiting military bases + restricted federal buildings like the White House
  • Age-restricted purchases, driving, voting, and access to federal and social benefits

Where to get one

There are 20 new, modern Driver Licensing Regional Offices dedicated solely to licensing — four are right here in Louisville where you can even schedule an appointment online ahead of time.

How much do they cost?

The cost of a standard REAL ID is increased by a few bucks compared to the standard driver’s license to account for the doubled renewal cycle + added security features — like the mandated star in the upper-right corner.

Those 21+ can choose between a four-year ID for $24 or an eight-year ID for $48.
